L'agence portugaise Aires Mateus, fondée par les frères Francisco Xavier et Manuel Roca Mateus ont conçus en 2005 le Centre des Arts de la ville de Sines, au Portugal.

Situé sur l'artère principale reliant la ville à la mer et à l'entrée du centre historique, le Centre des Arts propose diverses activités alliant des salles d'exposition, une bibliothèque, un cinéma-théâtre et un centre de documentation. L’un des principaux objectifs de ce projet était de renforcer les liens entre les habitants de Sines et l’art et la musique, mais aussi de valoriser le centre historique de la ville grâce à la construction d’un nouveau bâtiment attractif.

De ses 9 niveaux, ce monolithe en pierre envahit la surface totale du site formant un rempart. Le volume est ensuite sculpté, créant un jeu de pleins et de vides, donnant ainsi lieu à une composition volumétrique équilibrée. La simplicité du volume, associée à la pierre utilisée donnent lieu à une architecture simple mais imposante, minimaliste mais riche de part sa finesse, ses matériaux, et son programme.

Un contraste attrayant marque la transition entre un extérieur massif en pierre taillée, et un intérieur blanc neutre, dont chaque détail est valorisé par la lumière. La finesse des composantes des espaces intérieurs, entre muralités, percements, vitrage, rampes et marches marquent chaque espace, créant des scénographies diverses et un caractère sans pareil.

L'élégance des espaces intérieurs, tout comme celle du volume reflètent l'importance du détail en architecture. Le matériau a dans ce cas de figure un rôle majeur dans la composition volumétrique et spatiale.

The Portuguese agency Aires Mateus, founded by the brothers Francisco Xavier and Manuel Mateus Roca have designed in 2005 the Arts Center of the city of Sines, Portugal.

Located on the main thoroughfare connecting the city to the sea and at the entrance of the historic center, the Arts Centre offers various activities combining showrooms, a library, a cinema and theater and a documentation center. One of the main objectives of this project was to strengthen the ties between the people of Sines and art and music, but also to enhance the historic center of the city thanks to the construction of a new attractive building.

With its 9 levels, the monolithic stone invades the total area of the site forming a rampart. The volume is then carved, creating a play of solids and voids, resulting in a balanced volumetric composition. The simplicity of the volume associated with the stone used result in a simple but impressive, minimalist but rich because of its subtlety, its materials, and program architecture.

An appealing contrast marks the transition from a massive carved stone exterior and an off-white interior, every detail is enhanced by light. The fineness of the components of the interior spaces, between walls, openings, windows, railings and steps mark each space, creating various stage sets and character like no other.

The elegance of the interior spaces, like that of the volume reflects the importance of detail in architecture. The material in this case a major role in the spatial volume and composition.
